Many of you have not paid dues as of now for 2008.  Please remit.  For those who still owe from 2007, send it soon as the chapter does need these funds to operate.  Thank you to all who have so faithfully submitted their dues.

FROM THE EAST

Sisters and Brothers,

Our first meeting of Huntington Chapter’s new year was smooth and all officers were impressive with their work.  It was a most enjoyable evening.  For those who were unable to attend, we missed you and you missed us!   Not to worry, more opportunities for fellowship and Star Love are available.  And I am still awaiting phone calls from you who are unable to attend meetings. 774.222.5936  I will answer all calls.

At our June 25 meeting we will have a Strawberry Fest.  Please bring your own shortcake.  We will provide the strawberries and cream.  Let’s see how many different shortcakes there are! (including Rita’s favorite Costco)  However…in order to get your strawberries you must bring one of the following:

  • a phone calling card for our wounded soldiers
  • a non perishable item for the food bank
  • “Socks For Soldiers” an item  not necessarily socks, that our newly formed group for the deployed soldiers will welcome. Janice Maurath’s son will be deployed in the fall.  We can support our soldiers with useful (and fun) items to be sent to them.  Disposable razors, granola bars, underwear, socks, sample size shampoo, soap, deodorant etc.

REMEMBER – if you do not bring one of these items listed above, you will be eating dry, plain shortcake!

Also upcoming is our Festal of the Order Day on August 31.  This is a big undertaking and Sister Sarah could use your help.  Lots of things you can do at home .

At our July meeting we will have the pleasure of the Town Historian offer us insight into the area surrounding our home, Fellowship Masonic Hall.

It is June and with that brings Father’s Day.  We take pause to celebrate our Dads and our children’s fathers.  My Dad inspired me, pushed me and uplifted me.     In my story this month I introduce to you Randy Pausch, who while a professor at Carnegie Mellon University was asked to give a “Last Lecture” of the year, discovered he was dying of pancreatic cancer and was given months to live.  A loving father of three small children, he speaks not only of the messages he wanted to leave for his children, but also the life lessons he learned from his children.  I have offered Randy’s points of his lecture and added my thoughts.  Happy Father’s Day to all our “Dads”.

And remember – “Aspire to inspire before you expire!”

In Star Love,

Wendy

The Lessons I Am Leaving Behind – Randy Pasch

(added insight and remembrances from Wendy Moore)

1. Always have fun.  We can go through this life as A. A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh Characters.  You can be fun loving Tigger or you can be sack-eyed EEyore.  (my thought – my favorite cartoon is of a little boy posing as a reporter asking his dog why he is always is such a happy mood.  The dog’s response is  because I don’t like the alternative!)

2.  Dream Big. Randy speaks of missing the first walk on the moon because while he was at summer camp, it happened after his bedtime!  His Dad took pictures of the television report of the famous walk. (Dreaming big, sometimes means staying up late!  I can remember staying up long past bedtime sitting on the stone wall with my Dad and watching the most spectacular lighting show!  Way past 8:30 bedtime)

3.  Ask for What You Want Randy speaks of when they were at Disney and his young son wanted to ride in the nosecone of the monorail.  Thinking that it could not happen,  Randy asked anyway and they got to ride up front! (My Dad always said the worst that can happen is that someone will say no….but they may say yes!)

4.  Dare To Take A Risk Randy gave his students an opportunity to fail.  The First Penguin Award.  The premise is that when penguins jump into the water that may have predators, one of them has to be the first penguin to jump.  Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you wanted.  And it can be the most valuable thing you get.

5.  Look for the Best in Everybody If you wait long enough, people will surprise and impress you.  When you are frustrated with people, when you are angry, it may be because you haven’t given them enough time.  Be patient.

6.  Make Time For What Matters  When Randy and wife Jai were married, it was when he was 39.  They went on a month long honeymoon.  His boss insisted that he be reachable by phone.  He left this message:  “I waited til I was 39 to get married.  We are going away for a month.  I hope you don’t have a problem with that, but my boss does.  Here is the name and address of my wife’s parents.  With directory assistance you can get their phone number.  And then, if you can convince my in laws that your emergency merits interruption of their only daughter’s honeymoon, then they will give you our number. “  They got no calls.  (My Dad taught me that family was most important, time is limited) Time is all you have.  You may find one day that you have less than you think.

7.  Let Kids Be Themselves.  Randy having been so vocal about his dreams was asked abut his dreams for his three young children, Dylan, Logan and Chloe.  Kids – don’t try to figure out what I wanted you to become.  I want you to choose to become want you want to become.  I will be right there with you all the way.

( My own Dad was with me on earth for 46 years of my life.  He always encouraged us to reach high, live with intention and mostly have a sense of humor.  Thanks Dad!)
